A lot of new things are happening at Alaska Zipline right now. If you haven’t noticed, we have a new website, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. We would love to hear your feedback. Inguna over at Ante Meridiem Design is wonderful. We highly recommend her work. Check out their website.
We also have some new things happening at our downtown Go Green store on Franklin Street in Juneau. We are really excited to partner with Jeremy and Tyler from our local climbing gym: www.rockdump.com to bring you some great merchandise this summer. They will be bringing all of their prAna and Mission Playground clothing to our downtown office soon (check out some of their stuff on their website to get a feel for their merchandise: www.balanceclimbing.com. We will be open beginning on April 29th. We will also sell the Zipline Tours and several other local tours from our downtown office. Stop by for a visit!!
Cycle Alaska

On March 1, Cycle Alaska opened a new retail and repair bike shop in Juneau! The shop is located in the Lemon Creek area. Stop in and check out the new place! The Gustavus Inn received the 2010 James Beard Foundation America’s Classics Award! This is a national culinary award which is only given to five restaurants per year. Next time you are in Alaska, hop a quick flight to Gustavus to check out the beach asparagus, Halibut Caddy Ganty, and kelp salsa!

Mt. McKinley

Christine Feret is attempting to become the first woman to summit Mt. McKinley in the winter! She and her climbing partner are currently encountering blizzard conditions and have been camping in a snow cave since last Saturday. Only 16 people have summited the mountain in the winter and 34 attempts have been made. Good luck Feret!

Iditarod Begins!

Tomorrow there will be a ceremonial start for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in Anchorage, but the real racing begins in Willow on Sunday. The trail is 1,100 miles long, beginning in Willow and ending in Nome. This year will be the 38th running of the race. Favorites in the pack this year include Lance Mackey and Hans Gatt. Mackey is running for his 4th consecutive win. Both he and Gatt have won the Yukon Quest four times, with Gatt beating out Mackey to take the top spot this year. It’s going to be an exciting race!
Princess Kathleen

On Monday the US Coast Guard is going to send a team of divers to assess the shipwreck of the Princess Kathleen off of Lena Point in Juneau. The ship sank in the fall of 1952 after it ran aground. Oil sheens have been reported in the area since the ship sank but reports have increased in frequency lately. The divers will assess the integrity of the fuel tanks and try to estimate how much oil is trapped in the wreck.

Yesterday, Hindus celebrated Holi, the Festival of Color. This festival is meant to welcome spring. To celebrate people throw colored powders and water at each other. Looks like fun!

Closing Ceremonies

The Olympics are over… the final event took place yesterday and the closing ceremonies were last night. The Canadians couldn’t have planned a more exciting final event, with the US and Canada battling for victory in men’s ice hockey. The result of that thrilling, well-played game was Canadian gold… a highlight moment for the Vancouver games. The US won the overall medal count, but Canada walked away with the most gold. The games are closed now and we can all look forward to seeing our favorite winter stars in Sochi, Russia in 2014!
Billy Demong

US Olympic athlete Billy Demong had the day of his life yesterday. Not only did he win a gold medal, to go with his silver medal from Wednesday, he also got engaged and was selected to carry the US flag in the closing ceremonies! Demong took gold in the large hill nordic combined event. The silver medal was won in the team nordic combined event. He said he carried the engagement ring around all day on Thursday and after his big win, Demong proposed to girlfriend Katie Koczynski, who accepted immediately. Finally, he was notified that the athletes of the US Olympic Team had selected him to carry the flag in the closing ceremonies. What a day!
